Frequently Asked Questions
Will my dog be provided snacks throughout the day?
Of course! Each owner is encouraged to send meals for their dog if they’re used to eating during out time out. We bring plenty of homemade treats on each trip, and will often take higher calorie snacks like eggs or baked yams for the dogs during particularly cold or active trips.
What if my dog requires medication during the day?
Most medications are no problem. Some medications, however, may make participation difficult or impossible for a dog, as may the underlying health conditions for which that medication is needed. I’m happy to talk with you more about any of your dog’s daily medical needs.
What if my dog runs off/ gets lost?
Every dog is fitted with a GPS collar before leaving in the morning. I’m able to track your dog’s GPS location in real time, any time while they’re with me. If your pup does take off, each collar also has e-collar functions so I can provide commands at a distance (none of our collars are equipped with a shock function and they never will be). Each dog is screened for recall before joining the pack and those who are still working on recall can sign up for long-line training on a limited basis.
How do you handle health emergencies, accidents, or injuries while my dog is in the wilderness?
All owners will need to sign a consent form for emergency treatment if their dog requires vet care while adventuring with Pack It Up. Typically this would mean immediately loading everyone up and heading to the nearest emergency vet. I carry a canine first-aid kit and am canine CPR/first aid certified, so we can treat most minor injuries in the field. Each owner is welcome and encouraged to provide a written care plan for their pet in case of an emergency. Pack It Up is fully insured for dog walking, overnight care, and training.
